Doug Bernier???

I just feel like, solid start to the season or not, the Twins pretty much know already what Bernier brings. And that's why he's in AAA. He has a good glove and arm, no doubt. And a 30+ y.o. ball player should be able to hit AAA pitching or he wouldn't be around.

Nice to see Escobar finally get a few games at SS in the starting lineup. Even his anemic to so-so bat is an improvement over Florimon to this point. And he's still young enough to be part of a solution, starter or utility, rather than part of a problem.

I think Nunez gets a shot soon. Starter or utility I don't know for sure. The thing I keep wondering is how do you go from a Yankee top prospect, Jeter's heir, to posting less than stellar defensive numbers and gaining a not so great reputation? NY, Yankees, being heir to the throne pressure? Lack of consistent playing time?

I truly love watching Florimon and love what he brings to the club. But not only has he shown no improvement at all w the bat over last season, which I could still live with, but he's actually shown real regression to this point. Some kind of change has to be considered.

Why does no one bring up the fact that the Twins once also owned Solarte but let him go into free agency so they could acquire Florimon? Wouldn't he be a better option than any of Nunez, Escobar and Bernier? It sure would appear so unless he cannot play shortstop but only third or second base.

Probably because he's not with the team any more, and people are looking at the actual available options?

There is a fairly lengthy thread in the 'more baseball' area about Solarte.

For me the real concern is to get one of either the CF or SS to be able to hit. We can live with one hole in the line up but 2 will eventually catch up to us. Hicks is doing better the last week since we got Fuld who is also doing real well. As far as SS goes, I think the next step is to let Escobar start for a while and let Florimon be on the bench and see if he can figure it out. If not then we need to see about another SS. If Hicks is hitting I would rather have a good defensive SS then a good hitting SS. I am not opposed to tryng Bernier again as he can field and should hit atleast .220 with no power.

The thing about Bernier, he is what he is, though I think if he played regularly in the big leagues, he could hit .260/.330/.340 or so. That said, this year, he isn't playing a lot of short. He's playing everywhere including the outfield quite a bit this year too. Increasing his versatility and his value to a team.

Apparently the Yankees didn't get the memo, he's gotten 4 innings in so far:

Bernier is NOT the answer at SS. And how does Florimon "figure it out" on the bench? He needs to go back, today, and get swings in AAA or AA, and learn to become a utility guy, which, quite frankly, pretty much is his only hope to stick at the major league level.

He woudln't be able to be there every day. Fine for an inning or so.

The thing about Bernier, he is what he is, though I think if he played regularly in the big leagues, he could hit .260/.330/.340 or so.

You're nothing if not optimistic, Seth. .670 OPS would be just about average for an MLB shortstop. If Bernier was ever remotely capable of being an MLB average SS, he wouldn't have been a minor league free agent after each of the past 6 seasons, and he wouldn't be stuck in AAA and off the 40 man roster on a SS-starved team like the Twins.
