DY arrested in NYC

The usatoday online article also includes an embedded video of the bat-throwing incident (not to take away from this serious incident). I'd never thought to look for it, but there it was right there for the clicking. I had sorta wondered if that story had gotten blown out of proportion or been sensationalized, so it was interesting to see it (although Young is offscreen when the bat comes back into the frame, so it's still hard to tell exactly what happened, but certainly a better idea than before).

The anti-semitic remarks are hard to defend. But the rest is a non story. The victim suffered nothing more than scratches. Young wasn't even charged with assault but rather aggravated harrassment.

Let's go with impossible instead of hard, but also add "if true." Fair? I would agree that the "tussle" seems to be minor and well below on the seriousness scale. I'd also add that if I were inolved with the Tigers in any way that the "extremely intoxicated" and getting in after 2:30 in the morning wouldn't thrill me. I'm sure it happens a lot in that world, but that doesn't mean I'd think it's awesome. Especially in light of the Cabrera incidents of the last couple years.

I'm tempted to make jokes about it too, but trying to refrain because what he did really isn't at all funny. But I did always feel like the Twins dodged a bullet with him. The bat throwing video was widely circulated and got a ton of play on ESPN, but it happened in April 2006. Had it happened even a year later, YouTube and Deadspin would have gotten more of a foothold, and he would've gotten murdered online.

But the worst "incident" I can recall with him in while with the Twins was also one of the funniest:

Jose Mijares throws at Adam Everett of the Tigers for something earlier in the game (breaking up a double play roughly, or something, don't remember)

Tigers pitcher in the next inning beans Delmon Young in retaliation

Delmon starts hopping around in pain like he got shot

Delmon charges his OWN dugout, instead of the pitcher, trying to get to Mijares to rip his head off for getting him beaned

(Actually, Mijares was really stupid to bean a guy in a critical division guy, but it was still really funny...can't find the video)

Oh, Delmon ... I didn't think you were this stupid. Beyond the stupidity of the incident, think about the timing. You will be a free agent in about 6 months -- can't claim you are a stupid 21 year old kid anymore.

Right, and it's compounded by the fact that Miguel Cabrera had two pretty ugly off-the-field incidents in consecutive years. He was out partying with White Sox players early in the morning while the two teams were competing for the playoffs, and then got his faced scratched up in a domestic altercation. Then, the following year, he publicly berated a Detroit-area waiter (who was under 18 years old), calling him "fat" and making a huge scene. This crap gets swept under the rug when you put up MVP seasons one after another.

Apparently he was drunk and started yelling at a panhandler with a yarmulke on, and the tourists from chicago intervened and he got in a "tussle" with them. He's potentially going to be charged with aggravated hate crime harassment. I'd heard from folks who'd worked behind the scenes with the Twins and catering stuff that he was very often, and not a very nice guy to be around.

Source for these details?

It appears that Delmon's social skills are about as good as his defense in the outfield. Maybe some time spent in the klink will do him some good and with a hate crime attached to the charges against him it is certainly possible.

If this is true, he needs to get taken out behind the wood shed by teammates. You're a former first overall draft pick who hasn't come close to living up to expectations. Yet you feel entitled to be drunk at 2:30 am the night before a game committing hate crimes. Wow is all I have to say!

As noted previously, the anti-semitic marks, if he said them, are indefensible. Certainly it's not the worst thing a pro athelete has ever done, but I think it's more than a non-story.

If I were part of Tiger management or ownership, I would certainly consider it more than a non-story. If it were my wife (who is Jewish) that he shouted anti-Semitic stuff at and shoved to the ground, I would certainly consider it non-trivial.

If nothing else, it may shed a little more light on why the Twins were willing to trade him to a division rival for a song.

Souhan's columns may leave me rolling my eyes more often than nodding my head, but he nailed it with this one in the middle of 2010 when he said the time was right to trade Delmon for pitching:

I don't know if Oswalt was the right target, or if he would have come here, but we certainly would have gotten a lot more than a scrub relief pitcher for Delmon had we trade him mid-2010.
