July 21st Sean took the loss allowing 4 runs, 3earned in 6 innings while striking out 9. No walks, no home runs. He made it through six allowing only two runs (enough for the loss as the offense only produced one) but a single followed by an error began the top of the 7th and he left with no one out. Guerra promptly gave up a double leading to the third earned and the fourth unearned runs.

Sean has pitched twice since my last update. The first was a 7 1/3 inning shutout Gem allowing only two walks and scattering 5 hits on July 26th.

Last night he did not fair as well. In 6 innings he allowed 5 hits but also 5 runs and 3 walks. He gave up his 5th AAA HR of the year (he allowed only 2 at NB) for his 3rd AAA loss of the year. His Rochester line is now 1-3 with a 3.98 ERA. He has pitched 52 innings allowing 23 earned runs with 16 walks and 38K's (half the rate he had at AA)

Sean is still learning at this new level and Hoopefully more days in the future will look like July 26th and fewer the 31st.

On Tuesday, Sean started but only pitched two innings. In the first he struck out the side but mingled in a walk and two singles leading to a run. The second inning was a 1,2,3 affair with his 4th k. Then it rained and Hamburger was the pitcher taking over the next day.

Here's a AA video of a 3 k inning in New Britain

Since my last entry Gilmartin has pitched twice. In those games he pitched 9.2 innings giving up 9 hits, 4 walks, and 4 earned runs. He had no decisions and struck out 9 batters.

In more detail:

On Aug 23, Gilmartin struck out two and walked one in the first, walked another and got his third K in the second and set down the side in order in the third. The fourth inning started with his third walk. A swinging K was followed by a two run home run and a double. A fly out and ground out ended the inning. In the fifth, he began with a fly out but a single, stolen base and a walk later he was relieved by Hamburger. Hamburger got the hold and eventually the 3-2 win.

This Friday, August 29th, Gilmartin got a little help from his friends to survive the first two innings. The first inning started off with back to back singles. With runners on first and third, Hermann gunned down an attempt to steal second base. A sac fly led to the first run of the game and a grounder ended a rough first inning. The second inning also began with a single but a strike out was followed by a double play. For the second game in a row, the third inning was a breeze and Gilmartin got his second k of the day. The fourth inning went like this; Swinging K, single, single, Swinging K, single and a run, fly out. The fifth was like the third with his 5th strike out. Sean induced a groundout in the sixth and then was pulled in favor of AJ Achter who went on to win 3-2 (yes same scenario as Aug 23rd)

Editing note: Apologies for posting a partial and editing three times but I was losing my entry half way through and didn't want to keep retyping the whole thing.

Second Editing note: Apologies for the typos now corrected... Having a bad start to the day here...

Sean finished the year in Rochester after beginning the season in New Britain. He was 9-7 on the year with a 3.71 combined ERA. He started all 26 games he pitched in going 145.2 innings. He did not complete a game. He gave up 145 hits or a hit per inning and walked 44 for a 1.30 WHiP. 69 runners scored on his watch, 60 were earned. Sean stuck out 133 batters. 74 of those were in his 72 AA innings so the strike out rate dropped at AAA. On the other hand batters hit .250 against him in Rochester but .275 in New Britain for a combined .263.

All signs point towards a return to Rochester with a possible 2015 debut at some point. He is not a top line pitching prospect but he may have enough to be a decent back of the rotation pitcher who can miss some bats. He's not an ace but he's got more upside than many pitchers we have seen lately on the MLB roster.
