Hidden meanings behind the final roster & cuts?

Byron Buston & Alex Meyer are much closer to joining the team & will both make their MLB debuts this season.

Alex Presley being DFA'd leaving Jason Bartlett as the 4th OF & only backup CF.

  • Byron Buxton is only a injury away from being the starting CF. Barring another Hicks struggle, Hicks & Buxton are the starting LF/CF come September with Arcia in RF .
  • Presley was not good enough to play CF regularly defensively. They have confidence in their corner OF options in Kubel, Collabello, & Parmelee in AAA & didnt need Presley there. Buxton is also about to bump Hicks over in 2015.

Kyle Gibson being named the 5th SP with Deduno going to the pen.

  • Gibson did pitch well in ST & earned it but no more than Deduno had earned a spot. Correia will surely be moved in a deadline deal if Deduno stays healthy & continues to pitch well in relief.
  • Alex Meyer is the 2nd SP reinforcement (behind Deduno) in the case of injury/performance. He could very well force a Pelfrey trade if Pelfrey pitches well enough to not be banished to the pen or AAA on his own.

I'm not sure if there were hidden messages. I don't think they liked Pressley's work ethic/attitude i.e. acting as if he had a spot on the roster set. I don't think those decisions really affected either Meyer or Buxton, both of whom may make the team but it'll be based on how they do in the minors.

I think generally, the Twins are clearing their roster of guys that aren't on the 2015 team.

Meyer will be up in June, but I think that happens regardless of who made the team in April.

I think Buxton will get his feet wet in September. He is starting in High A and may miss a few games to start. So I don't know that he goes from high A to the big leagues any sooner than a September call up.

When Presley got cut, he spouted off about spring training not meaning anything, so I would agree that it was his attitude. I think Correia and Pelfrey could be dealt at the deadline if they can just be decent starters. Really excited to see Meyer and May at AAA to see how they fare. I still would bet Diamond would come up before Meyer though.

Since Meyer only chucked 78 innings last yr and 26 more in AFL my guess is that he is on a innings limit this year. Given Gardy's comments in spring training, despite the logjam of capable bullpen arms in ML and AAA I believe it is May who would potentially force a Pelfrey trade and Meyer would get time in the pen to limit his innings

Got to love the enthusiasm, but all Buxton proved in ST and AFL is that he is over-matched when faces AA plus competition.

a. let his wrist be healthy

b. let him put at least Pinto or Sano numbers in AA (OPS .900+)

c. and then we can start talk about him maybe being ready for the bigs

As is he might not be ready for AA...

I think he'd be a better defender & hit better than Hicks did last year. That said he needs to play & do well in AA still. My thoughts are just that they think he's a lot closer than the fan perception of how fast the team will promote him.

If he can bat 250-270 while playing good D & not be overmatched he's already better than 1/3 the starting lineup.

My opinion... Spring training doesnt mean much and it probably shouldn't in my opinion because players can go cold at anytime.

If Bartlett made the team it couldn't be based on his ST performance... To me... That means that Bartlett made the team the moment he signed the minor league deal.
