Twins Could Have New GM By Mid-Sept., Tampa's Chaim Bloom A Candidate?

The Twins have been very under the radar in their search for a new general manager, but could the team be in a position to announce a new hire before the end of the 2016 season? Recent remarks from Star Tribune reporter Phil Miller certainly make that sound like a real possibility.

Miller joined host Michael Rand on the most recent episode of the Star Tribune's Twins Insider podcast, and had a couple of very interesting tidbits to share in regard to the team's search for a new gm. The topic comes up toward the end of the podcast, around the 41-minute-mark.

Miller shares that inside the organization the "feeling has definitely set in that Rob (Antony) won't get the job" and added that the team has been very quietly doing their research and making progress. How soon could they be prepared to make a hire?

"I would be surprised, actually, if it went beyond second week of September," Miller said.

Miller even gave some insight into who one of the top candidates for the new GM may (or may not) be. He didn't name names, but Miller said while in Tampa he looked up one of the Rays' candidates for the job and was told by the teams PR department that individual wasn't interested in speaking with any media from Minnesota.

Who may that mystery candidate be? This is complete speculation, but my guess would be the Rays Vice President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom. The Twins are working with the same search firm that led the Brewers GM search, in which Bloom as finalist. He was also considered for the Phillies GM opening this offseason.

The Brewers actually interviewed Bloom last September, so we know the Rays aren't opposed to allowing members of their front office to interview for outside positions during the season. MLB Trade Rumors said this in regard to his fit in Milwaukee's search:

"The 32-year-old Yale grad would seem to fit the team’s preference for a rising young executive that can bring a familiarity with analytics to their revamped front office."

Bloom was promoted to his current position in October of 2014, but has been working for the Rays since 2005. Again, there is no concrete evidence that the Twins are tied to Bloom or even that the leading candidate is anyone the Rays organization, but it would certainly make a lot of sense.

There's some major league meetings coming up next week and expect St. Peter and Pohlad will both be there doing some interviewing, or so I would hope.I wou

ld really love to know the true exact questions they are asking new candidates.

Vision of the organization?What kind

of team do you see us fielding? What

do you need for front office support?

How much money do you need to do this?

Lavelle paints a different picture in the Trib today. (Unable to post the link.)

Anyway it would surprise me that a GM would be named that early, as 2 months is not very long for a search for this level of a position. Unless they were in the "hunt" much earlier than TR's departure. Also, I'd rather have them take the time to get it right vs. get someone there to beat a deadline, self-imposed or not.

You need to rush. You need that body at the World Series talking with others in the baseball field. You need to start looking at available players RIGHT after the seasons end. You need full evaluation of your system as guys are in Arizona and you prepare the 40-man roster and the winter meetings.

Hey, the Arizona group may be available. Cutting ties after two seasons. Whew!

There's only 30 of these jobs out there and there are easily 30 hungry assistants and a comparable enough of people who have done it and looking for a job,or in other areas of a team or in the major league structure. You are not working with a lack of candidates, many on par with Anthony (who by having this chance is positioning himself better for the job internally, posssibly elsewhere).

Any delay means that the powers that be are still acting in total system failure and have no idea what they want and will be twiddling their fingers listening to people offering possible results and direction, then putting their minds together and deciding they have no idea what will work.

I have to agree with Rosterman. if this article is true it seems the Twins and their search firm are targeting the right kind of people. The owners meetings should be used to interview maybe a top 5 or 10. From there maybe they get it down to 3. I would love to hear a hiring in September. From there you allow the new GM to take a look at the system and see what direction they want to go which I believe would be discussed in the interviews. The earlier the better!

I agree with brvama. Rob Antony is doing fine on an interim basis.  No need to rush.

Exactly the type of thinking that has led us to the present precipice.  A mid September hiring would mean a 2 month search.  Plenty of time to find the right guy.

Here is a link to that article by La Velle, which included this quote from DSP:

“We said we’d like to have it completed by the end of the baseball season, but that’s more of a goal and certainly not a requirement,” St. Peter said. “We’re realistic enough to know that it might need to extend beyond that.”

The Phillies' transition last year from Ruben Amaro, Jr., appeared to be smoother. (1) An understanding with the incumbent that he would be leaving. (2) Hire a club president who understands how the "baseball department" operates. (3) Cooperation by all involved during the transition. (4) A good group of candidates, with the new person hired before the end of the playoffs.

The Twins can still achieve #4.
