Contemplating the Worst Baseball Team in History

Twins Video

What in the heck happened? The Franchise that used to be the model that everybody wanted to emulate is now the franchise that nobody wants to copy.

Is Terry Ryan just terrible? Or, has he had uncommon circumstances that have led to this? One thing that comes through to me, is that there seems to be a terrible evaluation system of prospects. While other teams seem to produce young stars seemingly every year the Twins seem to be in perennial evaluation mode (Plouffe, Arcia.Hicks..etc)

They finally went free agent for pitching, and Nolasco who looked so good, has yet to earn any of his salary. Who could have predicted Santana? They are going to have to open the wallet..and sign free agents as position players because the Twins are so bad thats the only way for them to field a representative team.

I like most of you have waited and watched the minor league system hoping that the normal names are coming to Minneapolis in the very near future....but honestly I dont think there are going to be wholesale improvements do you?

Joe Mauer one of the best players in the game is a hindrance for the team, he occupies a position that is traditionally occupied by a power hitter, sorry Joe 270 and no power makes you a liability not an asset.

When we read the minor league reports we see the Twins farm system is competitive with the other teams, the big mystery is, why doesn't it translate to the major league level?

Combination of bad decisions (Hunter, Nolasco, Boyd, Stauffer, Robinson, etc.) and bad luck (Santana, high opponent BABIP, low Twins' BABIP, etc.)

A couple of bad lucks so far this year. Terry Ryan and Company always seemed to look at building a team that would be competitive in the division first, then cross their fingers that they can hold their own against the rest of the leagues.

We can't complain that money wasn't spent.

We can't complain that attempts weren't made to fill in pieces with competent players.

Players can shine or stink, you have no control over that. You ultimately hope to build a team that can compliments the highs and lows.

We didn't look this bad in spring training, not that spring training means anything, but....

And we could trade Joe, but who do we get for first base? Ryan Howard, perhaps?

Every year someone has to struggle. Texas did. The Phillies have ahd issues. The Mets and Cubs always come up short. No one expects anything from Houston, at times Miami. Kansas City has been the poster-child of franchises that sometimes have less than 10,000 fans in the stands (Oakland A's anyone).

We remains fans. We second guess, we offer opinions, we admire that it is a tough way to make a living, running a team and playing on a team.

There's always the joy of watching your team AND the other team play, a hotdog and beverage in your hands, sun shining in from the outfield. You win, you lose.

For the past year and a half the Twins problems can't necessarily be blamed on cheapness - nope - it's a series of very poor baseball decisions, and still the major "decider" remains employed -.  . .

The Twins will never be the Yankees.  Furthermore, if you are forced to build a team through free agency, you will fail.  You will inevitably overspend on players for past performance (see 2015 Yankees and Phillies).  Free agency only works as a supplement to homegrown talent.  It's never the solution.

If Joe Mauer hits anything close to his career slash line of .318/.400/.458, he is an asset at ANY POSITION ON THE FIELD.  Stop worrying about HRs and RBIs and look at Joe as a "John Olerud" rather than a "Miguel Cabrera."

Because the bulk of the talent is still down on the farm.  We're only starting to see the first wave of prospects arrive in Arcia, Vargas, Gibson, and crew.  Patience.  This rebuild was set back a year last year when Sano and Buxton missed all season, but it's still on track.  Keep the faith.
