Notes from Terry Ryan - CF, Meyer, etc.

Twins Video

My friend asked Terry to handicap CF at Twinsfest. He did not mention Hicks at all. The first name he mentioned was Eddie Rosario. When asked about CF versus a corner, Terry said Eddie is definitely good enough to play CF.

He seemed to hint again, at Sano in the OF if Plouffe continues to improve

Open to Meyer in the pen. Said last year he was throwing instead of pitching, which caused his location issues.

One prospect he thought would make a huge jump is Kohl Stewart. Seemed very high on him.

He kept saying Ricky gets a do-over and needs to get straightened out

Well, I know Eddie can handle CF, but I wouldn't want him out there in an every day capacity. Want to have an even more terrible OF-defense this year? This is the route you would take to do that.

If Eddie earns a spot out of Spring Training, I still believe he's only keeping the spot warm for Buxton.  So using him as an every day CF for half the year, then moving him to a corner spot would be OK.  Sano in the OF?  That could be the 2nd coming of Delmon Young...

Rosario is certainly very likely to be better than Aaron Hicks, overall, in his MLB career. But, that shouldn't mean a very Hicks-like treatment of Rosario by giving him the CF position out of Spring Training! That's a terrible idea. Adding Hunter, I thought, ended the possibility of seeing  Rosario for at least three months. I think TR is just saying stuff again.

I thought the reports on Rosario's defense were good.  We just moved him because of Buxton.

Rosario's reports are fine, but never have been on the level of Aaron Hicks or Buxton's from a defensive standpoint. Rosario was moved because they (at the time) saw a lack of IF depth, and a plethora of OF depth in the minors, and Rosario was the best option to stay in the infield.

In the short term, if Rosario provides some competition for Hicks and gets him some seasoning up here, that is fine with me.  His future, if he has one up here is in a corner.

I have been publicly predicting Eddie Rosario will make the club out of spring training.  I really doubt that will happen, but I'm pulling for a long shot to happen.  Rosario would have to be clearly better than his competition in center, not only Hicks, but also Schafer and the Twins would have to be wedded to having Santana as the shortstop.

I see a better future for Rosario than Hicks, but left field is probably the position he will get most of his playing time.

Eddie Rosario could be a very good defensive centerfielder, and he could play there until Buxton is ready and do well.

I'd be shocked if Aaron Hicks isn't the opening day centerfielder, but I think Rosario will get some opportunity. I think if Hicks is really bad in spring, then they would most likely go with Schafer and Robinson.

Why should Hicks' spring matter even a little bit? He looked very strong in 2013 and pretty good in 2014, but came out of the gate under .200 both years. I just can't see how Hicks should start the season with the Twins. Let the guy master AAA.
