Tomorrow is June and I started thinking about the July trade deadline which means what to do with Morneau? His batting average has returned to a respectable .294, but he lost his homerun power swing with only two for the year. It's his contract year and the prevailing sentiment at the beginning of the year was to let him go because Parmelee's natural position was 1st base and he was a power hitter. Then Parmelee went into a funk and has only recently started showing signs that he might be having more respectable plate appearances.

Morneau is making $14 million through this contract and may not be willing to accept a significant cut. So what does the Twins organization do, trade him now for a prospect or try to lock him in with a less amount of salary?

It's pretty simple right now. No one is going to want him unless he starts to get his slug% up.

Parmelee is no sure thing, but between him, Arcia, and Colabello, one of them could step over to first and do the job okay next year.

However, I believe Morneau has the highest upside on this team and he likely has little trade value. I still think he has some dominance left in his tank. I'd offer to extend him- 2 years @ $7mil/year. Twins have paid a premium to help him recover from injuries. I'd like to see them get some over-production at a reasonable price in return.

Pop has made an excellent point. We have paid Morneau quite a bit of money to be hurt (not his fault) and produce far less then has been expected. Morneau is rich, richer than Eskimos as Homer Simpson would put it. If I were him I might accept a much lower multi-year deal because 1) I want to be a MN Twin. 2) I don't need the money. 3) I just got paid a bunch to sit out a lot (again, not his fault). Somewhere in the ballpark of 3 years/7-8 mil per sounds about right. Maybe this is wishful thinking, but Morney strikes me as the kind of guy who would think along these lines.

I'd love for Morneau to stay on a reasonable, team friendly deal. However, I think it's crazy to think any athlete is thinking they will accept a low offer just because they "don't need the money". It'd be nice, but unfortunately that is not the world we live in.
