2012 - July Trade Deadline Moves

#1 - Josh Willingham, Francisco Liriano, Alexi Casilla to Pittsburgh Pirates

for AAA OF - Robbie Grossman (b- grade), A+ SP - Jameson Taillon (a- grade), A SS - Alen Hanson (b/b+ grade), AAA SP - Kyle McPherson (c+ grade), & AAA/MLB RP - Evan Meek.

* if they're unwilling to part with Taillon , get A Ball pitcher Luis Heredia instead....a rich man's version of Adrian Salcedo with strikeout potential.

#2 - Matt Capps to Any contending team with a need of a closer. (ideas are any team from L.A. and the N.Y. Mets)

Angels Infield prospect Kaleb Cowart OR Taylor Lindsey would be a good target , maybe too rich..... also Dodgers Pitching prospect Allen Webster or even Garritt Gould....and Mets SP prospect Juerys Familia or Jennry Mejia.

#3 - Denard Span (either now or off-season) to Washington Nationals

-Sign FA OF Torii Hunter to 2 yr. 12 Million dollar deal with a 5.5 Million dollar option for 2015...make it incentive laden early on if a must.

-DFA Nick Blackburn TOTAL savings NA

Sign 1 Top of the Rotation SP = ***Cole Hamels at 4 yrs $78 Million. apprx. $ 19.5 a year with incentives that can make the deal 85/86 Million with a 21 Million dollar option for 2017. *** (probably un-realistic)

I see a lot of creative ideas, but what would be the benefit of bringing back Torii for $6 million per year? The Twins have no shortage of decent outfielders. And don't you think that the Angels or some other team might offer Hunter at least $9 million per year to get a solid right handed batter who is still a capable fielder?

Great post, but I don't (yet) see the logic of bringing Torii back.

Also, the reason that the Twins signed Willingham is because he fits the profile of hitter that does well at Target Field. Hunter was more of a guy built for the Metrodome, which is something that Ryan realized this offseason when he started making moves for people that are more built for hitting at Target Field.

Interesting. A few things. I don't get the Torii thing either. There are probably going to be about 1/3 fewer prospects coming back than what you have here. Marcum is *definitely* someone the Twins should go after, but I would imagine it is going to be at $10 million per year.

I'd put the over/under on Hamels at 6/$130M. Definitely going to get $20M+ per, definitely going to get 6+ years guaranteed. The market loves lefty aces. $19.5M/year might land Greinke, but they'd probably have to go at least 5 years. With the injury, Marcum might not get $10M AAV, but I bet he gets more than 6.5M. Maybe a match of Pavano's deal? No need for Torii - Benson's gonna be able to at least match the old man's OPS, and with much fresher legs...

Yeah, well Torii Might come to the Twins , and only the Twins, at a slight discount.... and his overall profile fits in as a decent middle of the order hitter that can come somewhat close to replacing Willingham's impact....obvious the HR's won't be near Joshs' ....but there arn't a whole lot of Corner OF options....

and without Willingham AND Span the Twins are going to need at least 1 OFer to bring in.

If theres a REAL option out there better than Hunter, I'm all ears.... Maybe there is and for not tooo much more cost.

Willingham is going NOWHERE! He is producing and signed for 2 more seasons to a team friendly contract. Liriano's value right now, today, is as high as its going to get. I don't know our minor league system very well and nothing about any other teams systems, but I would think we would need to find a team that needs 1.) Starting pitching today (Liriano), 2.) An OF who can lead-off and is under team control (Span) and 3.) Maybe a veteran utility IF (Carroll) or veteran RP (Duensing or Gray) and has 1.) An excess of SP that is 2 years or less away from MLB and 2.) A power bat to replace Willingham, Doumit or Morneau in 2 years and some other throw-in pieces. Find the this fit and make the deal.

Thanks for the post. Always good to see ideas out there from people who have thought things out. I will say sorry but the words Torrii Hunter and discount do not fit together. If Torii signs for less money then anticiipated it is because nobody offered more. This from a person who loved Torii as a Twin. Don't over pay for a aging outfelder with a system of potential young stud outfielders. Also if Joe Benson is in the Majors, he should be playing everyday. Very creative ideas.
