Absolutely agree with this article. You want a manager that will get right in your face. Billy Martin comes to mind. You didn't mess with Billy Martin. Guess what? He was a born winner. He was born to win. I like the managers that can get their players' knees shaking. When you're more afraid of your own manager than the other team, you will win. 

I agree with this article. Rocco is a "soft" manager and we turned into a "soft" team. Batting practice being optional for the players, making lineups out a week in advance (reported by others) leading to too many days off in my mind), playing too many players out of position, etc. 

You play how you practice. And sometimes we don't practice. 

Yes, I desire some fire from my manager and coaches. the maddest I saw Rocco all year was in a game when some minor rule got broke (sorry I can't remember what it was right now) and he held the game up for what seemed like 5 minutes. 

The manager needs to know when to step on the pedal and Rocco didn't this year for the playoffs. He's a young manager and I hope he learned from this season. I have my doubts though. I do love the coaches he hired and the changes made in hitting and pitching, but game management often let a lot to be desired. I also would like to see more of our players develop a two-out approach of trying to hit the soft pitches RBI singles rather than bomba's all the way.

There is a thriving industry called "Motivational Speaking" for a reason. 

The buzz around the sports world is the days of the fiery managers and coaches is OVER. Yelling and screaming at the poor overpaid babies just doesn't work anymore.

I'm not buying it. I don't want a total jerk behind the bench or in the dugout, I want some passion and when needed a bit of brimstone. Whenever they say a manager or coach is a 'player's manager or coach....look out. I don't think thats a compliment, or that it is good.  The manager always has to keep a legitimate distance from his players to have their respect. They have to skilled in a lot of communication skills, but the one that for me never works, is being too soft.

Maybe this is a generational thing...may very well be...but when a manager just gets his hat handed to him the way Rocco did this past series, the very LAST thing fans want to hear, at that moment, is how happy he is with them. You also don't call them a bunch of slugs to the media either....but there has to be some accountability for such a complete failure...when none of the other teams sunk that low.

I still can’t believe it. I think overconfidence played a big part, too.

I disagree - fire is good when things are equal, but when Scherzer and Strasburg and Corbin are out there nothing makes a difference.

Apparently the Cardinals' manager's ranting and raving and cursing and shouting couldn't motivate the Red Birds enough to overcome good pitching and good hitting.  4 and out against the Washington Nationals.
