Originally posted at kbro's baseball blog I read LaVelle's piece about whether the Twins should carry three catchers on the roster. It's a good question -- should they keep three just so they have adequate fill ins in case one of them gets hurt, or should they free up that roster spot for, say, another utility guy or pitcher (how many pitchers they should have on the roster is another rant entirely)? So here's the design the Twins will use if they go with three: the regular catcher
Why the twins won’t win the central. With spring comes optimism, every team has a .500 record, everyone is healthy, everyone has a chance. In the words of Lee Corso, “not so fast my friend.” The twins have no chance in 2012. Missing from the lineup is their longtime closer Joe Nathan, who after a rough start in 2012 pulled it all together during the end of the year. Instead the Twins decided to give Matt Capps money and throw him the 9th inning, cause that went so well in 2011. Michael
Keith Law of ESPN Scouts Inc. came out with the first edition of his Top 50 (Insider required) draft prospects, and had an interesting take that differed from just about every other site I have seen. The top player on his board was Georgia High School OF Byron Buxton, who I reviewed here, saying he has the “potential for five above-average or plus tools” and also echoing the comparisons to the Upton brothers I have heard elsewhere. Buxton does defiantly fit the Twins preferred draft mold as an a
I have always enjoyed listening to other fans tell their stories of why they became baseball fans in general & Twins fans in particular. I hope you enjoy reading this & you reflect & reminiscence of the joys of when you became a fan. I was born in Minneapolis & became a passive Twins fan when they moved here from Washington at the tender age of 7. During that first year of professional ball in the Twin Cities I became crippled with perthes bone disease & was confined to hom
I don't think Fielder is the worst first baseman in the league, but he definitely makes his fair share of errors. Re-Converting Cabrera back to a third baseman is a scary thought I'm sure for Tigers fans. It wouldn't surprise me if Cabrera might have difficulty leaving his fielding woes behind when he comes to the plate. As we all know, baseball is such a mental game and Cabrera has proven at times to be a bit of a headcase. It sounds like Raburn will be getting most of the starts at second
It's been less then a week since I joined Twins Daily but I have to say I am impressed so far....extremely impressed with what Parker, Seth, John and co. have done. I always enjoyed their blogs on the Strib, their attention to detail is what impressed me most. Now I'm not a uber stats guy...BABIP and WAR don't really do it for me but I can only guess it can be pretty time consuming to come up with these stats and put them in a well written column that most everybody can understand and appreciate
cross-posted from The Tenth Inning Stretch The Tampa Bays Rays have announced that they will give away The Don Zimmer Bear, a bear with the face of Don Zimmer. The mania of putting a chubby manager's face of a teddy bear and giving it away to kids in the ballpark has been virally spreading across the league. The Twins today announced that they will join in the mania give away a Gardy Bear to the first 5,000 children on Friday April 13, when the Twins play against the Rangers at Target field.
Last Saturday pitchers and catchers reported and today the rest of the Minnesota Twins are down in Fort Myers for Spring Training. If you haven't had a chance to experience spring training I highly recommend it. Imagine going to a relaxing baseball game at Target Field, now imagine adding a vacation and an extra layer of "laid backness". For the younger kids there is plenty of opportunities to meet their favorite players and even get an autograph or two. For the older kids you get a chance to si
[Originally posted at my blog, http://twinsfanfromafar.blogspot.com] I have to admit that I was quite surprised this past week to read that Seth Stohs, Parker Hagerman, John Bonnes and Nick Nelson -- the premier Twins bloggers that provide great Twinscentric content for the Star Tribune, among other publications -- had decided to give up their individual blogs and join forces. As I write that sentence, it almost sounds like something out of a comic book written for Twins geeks! They are now prov
Over the next several months, Twins fans are going to hear a lot about the June MLB draft, and for good reason. The Twins have the #2 overall pick and five picks in the Top 100. Coming off of a 99 loss season, and having a middle-of-the-pack minor league system, it is important to take advantage of the draft. In coming months, you’ll read names like Mark Appel, Lucas Giolito, Devin Marrero, Byron Buxton and Mike Zunino frequently. Today I wanted to look at the draft a little differently. It is
Last year I had fun writing a post about two of the things I am passionate about, the Twins and the Academy Awards. It was a fun post for me to compile and I got positive feedback from multiple sources after last year's post. With the Oscars around the corner and spring training already started in Florida, I figured it was time for another rendition of my "Twins headlines turned into Oscar movie plots." Below you will find all of the films nominated for Best Picture in this weekend's ceremony
The Twins roster right now seems fairly set outside of 1-2 bullpen spots and one bench spot. But with Luke Hughes perhaps not being fully ready at the beginning of the season, it is possible that two spots will be available. Many think that Nishioka has the inside track for one of those spots, but he also cannot right now be trusted to play second base, so having a backup shortstop who isn't a good defender and has shown nothing at the plate so far would seem to be problematic. So, removing H
[Original Posted at VeryWellThen.com] Below are excerpts from various sources regarding today's shocking announcement from MLB. Press Release: First Annual MLB Hunger Games MLB.Com – 7 hours ago The Capitol (AP) -- President Selig announced today that Major League Baseball is replacing its annual All-Star Game with the First Annual MLB Hunger Games, to be held in Kansas City from July 9 through July 11, 2012. Each MLB team will be required to provide one position player and one pitche
Third baseman and non-roster invitee Sean Burroughs reported to Twins spring training camp yesterday and apparently took some time to talk to reporters, as you'll find him in numerous stories today. That's not surprising. Burroughs is a good story - a Little League hero who rose to prize prospect, flamed out in 2007, fell into a life of substance abuse and returned to the majors as a bench bat last year. For now, it's a happy ending. For Twins fans, it has a chance to be happier still, because
As a long-time Twins fan, like many of you, I have collected a fair number of Twins caps over the years. I wear them to games, while doing yard work, and sometimes in my office. I wear them when watching Dick-n-Bert. I wear them while listening on my MLB GameDay app. I wear them while reading the Twins blogs and news most every morning. A few years back, during the middle of the 2001 baseball season, I developed a bit of what some people might call a "superstition" regarding my headwear. I
So what’s a surefire way to make sure no one ever reads your new blog again? Well, why not call out some of the fan base for what I feel has been questionable, if not irrational behavior. I was just as frustrated as every other fan with this past Twins season, but I still do not think it justifies the amount of vitriol I have read in various comment sections, newspapers, discussed with friends, and listened to on the radio. The two biggest issues everyone seems to have are the misconceptions
Now that pitchers and catchers have officially reported to Ft. Meyers we can turn off the hot stove and turn on our baseball brains. My baseball brain would like to offer the Twins the following promotional opportunity. The team recently announced that, for the first time in a decade, there would be no bobblehead give-away day this season. Since the bobbleheads were once a big lure for a team struggling to draw fans, boost attendance and generate revenue to put back into payroll, we need some ki
This morning the Wall Street Journal decided to talk a little baseball (yay!). They dove into each teams offseason activities and ranked them based on their collective expected WAR (from Fangraphs.com) from acquisitions and losses. They didn't include promotions from within the organizations or demotions within the organizations expected or otherwise except in the case of the Mariner's Montero. According to WSJ the Twins came in 6th place this off-season with net WAR increase of 4.4. Unsurp

Jose Rodriguez was the Twins Daily short-season minor-league hitter of the year. He is at the Dominican facilities for spring training now but will likely join Extended Spring Training in Fort Myers.
I really hold back what I would like to say about then payroll arguments here. The fact that people don't accept the amount taken in dictates the amount going out requires one of two things. Extreme financial ignorance or fanatical bias that prevents the acceptance of something some basic. I did not change the argument. It's the same idiocy over and over. Do you really want to be on the side that suggests revenues does not determine spending capacity?
