A Season Blank and Pitiless as the Sun (Twins versus Tigers - Games 156-158)

Look Upon Mauer and Tremble (Twins 4 Tigers 3-- Game 156)   Mauer's out for the season, like we all knew he would be. Concussion City gains a new resident. And this Pinto kid seems like he's ready to play some catcher. People wonder if Mauer can come back to put on the tools of ignorance. People wonder if Mauer can come back at all.   The M and M boys are gone, leaving Target Field empty like a Halloween candy bowl. Mauer seems likely to be back in some way, shape, or form. Morneau's probably go

A Quick Case of the Sox (Games 35-37)

White Sox at Twins   Four Sacks of Groceries and Two Dingers (Game 35)   When the Twins have a three run lead, it’s safe to grocery shop without excessive worry.   When the Twins are behind, each trip down the grocery store aisles is pure agony. Every spare moment and empty space offers an opportunity to check the score on your cell phone. When the other team’s runs pile on, it’s hard to keep shopping.   The Twins rewarded my trust with a surplus of runs and a magical day for Aaron Hicks. He hit

A Bad Day for Dodgers - A Twins Blog.

In about 24 hours, the Los Angeles Dodgers disassembled the Minnesota Twins and left them in little pieces, out in the rain. On top of that, two of the moving parts don't work anymore. Alcala and Kirilloff need repairs, and they're both key cogs in the Twins machine. They say the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and right now those parts do not add up.  I monitored the first game on my cell phone. My ear was too clogged (allergies) to listen to the game. I'd watch the game, but I

7 Times 15 Only Equals 28 Once

Imagine the Universe, swirling mysteriously across untold aeons and dimensions. Within this maelstrom, how can one isolate the force that is Mauer Power? How far does it extend? Is it more polite than other Universal forces, like Hulkamania?   My goals may be lofty in this Universe, and yet I am COMPELLED to write yet another column about Mauer and the home runs. This Question of the Ages is a perennial classic for the local sports media. For most of them, it seems Mauer Power did not increase t

(Twins at White Sox -- Games 149-151

Cool Breeze, Eyes Closed (Twins 1 White Sox 12 - Game 149)   After getting our house Halloween ready the night before, I came home to a perfectly decorated house. The smell of fall blew through the windows and hung in the air.   It covered the stench of what Liam Hendriks was doing on the mound in Chicago. The Great Dane agreed with me.   If anyone's excited to see the Twins lose, it's Stella the Great Dane. She was traumatized when I jumped up and stomped around the living room after Kubel wo

"Baseball GOOD!" Says Frankenstein's Monster - A Twins Blog

There were lots of bad baseball moments this holiday weekend. Yesterday, I would've written a whole blog entry about despair and bullpen blow-ups. Today the Twins split the Red Sox series with a decisive victory and I'm a happy boy. Couple home runs, some late inning score-padding. Dylan Bundy turning in a solid performance - we'll just worry about those hard-hit balls later, shall we?  Game-by-game, I'm like Frankenstein, Twins win. Baseball GOOD. Twins lose. Baseball BAD. The big guy's be
