Twins Spring Training Report from Fort Myers: 3/18/15

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---------   Today was my first full day at Fort Myers and the Twins had a split squad duo of games, with the half of the team hosting the Orioles at Hammond Stadium and the other half a few miles away playing the Red Sox at Jet Blue Park. This was the second year in a row as far as renovations went for the facilities, and the Hammond Stadium looks really great. The front facade is extended to both broaden the concession place plaza and put a ro

First Cut at the Twins' 25-man Opening Day Roster and Analysis of Remaining Spring Training Battles

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---- After the 18 recent cuts the Twins made (some of them unannounced yet) yesterday, the camp roster was trimmed to 43 players. I did provide a break down of those players by position yesterday, also mentioning whether they have options or whether they are on the 40-man roster. Based on these numbers, I am taking a preliminary look at the Twins' potential opening day roster, position by position:   Position players (13)   Catchers (2/3)   Suzuki

Three things the Twins need to do to compete in 2015: Part III: Fix the attitude.

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---- This is the third and last, but not least, segment in this series. You can find the first segment (fixing the bullpen) and the rationale for the series here, and the second segment (fixing the outfield) here. I think that the most important (and some times the hardest or the easiest) thing to fix for the Twins to win, is the team attitude.   How do you measure attitude and how does attitude prevent some one to win, and what is that "attit

Looks like the Twins had only one awful pitcher and 13 at average or above in 2014, according to this new data.

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ----   A great article was written today by Jonathan Judge and published at The Hardball Times, called FIP in Context, introducing an new metric, called cFIP, or contest-adjusted FIP that attempts to "estimate the pitcher’s true pitching talent during a particular season". Always interested in new pitching metrics development, and not only because I have partaken myself in the endeavor. this is an interesting one, albeit much more complex than P

Three things the Twins need to do to compete in 2015: Part II: Fix the outfield

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch -----In the first part of this series, I discussed why the Twins should focus only on improving 3 things, and if they do so, they will be competitive. I also spoke in length about the first of those things, fixing the bullpen. Today, in the second part, I will be discussing the outfield.   The outfield situation was, using one word, horrid in 2014. And this is nothing new. I looked at the outfield defense performance at length, while the ashes

Three things the Twins need to do to compete in 2015: Part I: Fix the pen.

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ----   At first read, the title of this series sounds very much like A Midsummer Night's Dream: Do I dare suggest that the team that went from 99 to 96 to 96 to 92 losses the past five seasons needs to do only three things to compete? The next number to that Arithmetic Progression up there is between 88 and 92 and that is not competing by any means. Let me explain my train of thought here before the nice kind people in white come and get me to war

A new metric for evaluating shortstop fielding

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch --- (this is an edit to clarify a few points that were confusing previously)   Recently when I was looking for an objective way to numerically describe how good Engelb Vielma's glove for my Minnesota Twins' top 40 prospect list, which is fairly easily understood as a concept, I came up with a simple metric: The percentage of putouts that resulted in a double play. I did a bit of research to see whether it will pass the stink test, and looked at

The signing of Torii Hunter might close a big hole for the Twins

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ------ On paper the Minnesota Twins' reunion with 39 year old Torii Hunter last night, seems a bit puzzling. Rational thinking and looking at records and results of games, would suggest that a team coming back from seasons of 99, 96, 96 and 92 losses and hurting primarily in pitching and defense, would need an aging 39 year old outfielder with diminishing defensive skills being the marquee transaction of the season, as much as a painful communica

Preliminary Twins mid-season top 40 prospect list (including 2014 draftees)

The 2014 draft is over, I have seen several Twins' prospects play for the first time last Spring, and the full season 2014 minor league seasons are close to mid-point, so it is time to revisit the Twins' prospects and release my mid-season top 40 l

Phil Hughes is having an All-Star season and were several signs that this would be

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch -----   Phil Hughes so far (8 starts, about a quarter of the season) has been the Minnesota Twins' best pitcher and should definitely have All-Star consideration. In addition to his old school 4-1, 3.61 ERA, he has 7.6 K/9, 6.7 K/BB, and 1.225 WHIP. This translates to a 41.6 PE, which is in Ace territory. Take into consideration that he achieved that with a .326 BABIP (thanks to the Twins' playing catchers, shortstops and designated hitt

What did I see from Eduardo Nunez last weekend

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch --- As I indicated earlier, in addition to seeing Alex Meyer, one of my goals last weekend when I attended the Red Wings' last 3 games at the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, was to have a good look at the newest Twins' player Eduardo Nunez. Nunez, once the heir apparent to Derek Jeter and a Yankees top prospect, was traded by those Yankees to the Twins for Miguel Sulbaran (quick scouting report from this Spring Training here.) Red Wings at IronPigs 3 game Redux: Part I: Alex Meyer.

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ----   I had the opportunity to watch the Rochester Red Wings' last 3 games (the double header last night and this afternoon's game) in my back yard against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs over the weekend. My list of must dos were to see whether Alex Meyer was as good as he was this Spring, in real game situations and to see what Eduardo Nunez was all about. Happily to say, that I have done that and more and I am ready to share.   Speaking about

I have mixed feelings about Jason Bartlett making the Twins...

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---   ...and has nothing to do with nostalgia.   The Twins have been busy trying to finalize their 25 man roster, this week, the last of Spring Training, and unless you are lucky enough to vacation to a remote island away from mobile phones and the Internets, you would know by now that there was a waiver wire frenzy that had two Twins without options (Chris Parmelee and Scott Diamond) passing through waivers unclaimed and assigned to Rochest

Spring Training Redux: How will the Twins do in 2014? Here is my prediction.

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch --- Every year I wait to watch the Twins in Spring Training before I form an opinion about how they will do this coming season. And I like to watch them in person to do this, just trying to see little signs here and little clues there. A bit before I did that, my arm was twisted to give a number of wins and position of finishing for the Twins this season, and I predicted that the Twins will go 81-81 to finish third in AL Central. Twins Spring Training Report from Fort Myers: 3/16/2014: Dueling Aces and MILB games

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---   Today it was Minnesota Day at Hammond Stadium, which apparently means that a whole bunch of people get early at the ballpark to tailgate at the parking lot and is a pain to find parking spots. I arrived just in time for the two intrasquad games (AAA vs AA) and (A+ vs A) at Fields number 2 and 3. Aaron Hicks was hitting for the AA team and Pedro Florimon was playing for the AAA team, so that is where I exclusively spent my time befor

Twins Spring Training Report from Fort Myers: 3/15/14: Top prospects galore

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---- The (big) boys were out of town today and this left only the two A-level squads in action at the Lee County Sports Complex fields playing the A and Advanced A level Orioles' squads. One of the things that need to be noted, is that these squads do not see each other in regular season competition. The Twins' Advanced A team, the Fort Myers Miracle, is in the Florida State League, whereas the Orioles' Advance A team, the Frederick Keys,
