7/21 PREGAME NOTES: Santana vs. Sanchez, TK Statue, ’87 Reunion and Injury Updates

The Detroit Tigers are in town, and it’s fitting because the Minnesota Twins are in a celebrating mood. They’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of the 1987 World Series team — a team which toppled the Tigers to get there — and they also unveiled the eighth statue in Target Field history.   https://twitter.com/Brandon_Warne/status/888521345608417284   That is, that of manager Tom Kelly, who led the team not only to the ‘87 crown but another in 1991. He’s the winningest manager in Twins history,

7/17 GAME NOTES: Twins Duck Rain in 4-2 Win Over Yankees

Pinch hitter Eduardo Escobar singled home Joe Mauer in the bottom of the eighth as the Minnesota Twins dodged the oncoming downtown deluge to beat the Yankees 4-2 at Target Field on Monday night. Escobar came off the bench to hit for Kennys Vargas, and delivered the key hit against Yankees left-handed reliever Caleb Smith, who was making his big-league debut in relief of Bryan Mitchell.   Vargas was sent back to Triple-A Rochester after the game to make room for Tuesday’s starter, Bartolo Colon.

7/17 PREGAME NOTES: Mitchell vs. Mejia, Steamy Night at Target Field, Injury Updates

It’s sunny and steamy as the Twins prepare to open a three-game set at Target Field against the New York Yankees. The Twins come in 46-45, with losses in four of their last five games including dropping two of three in Houston coming out of the All-Star break. The Yankees come in to open the season series against the Twins with a 47-43 record after splitting a four-game set against the Red Sox at Fenway Park to open the second half.   The Yankees figure to be a bit taxed coming into the series,

WARNE: Four Trades the Minnesota Twins Should Consider Making

We’re now past the All-Star Game and headed full steam toward the trade deadline on July 31. For the Minnesota Twins, a lot of things can happen between now and then, with games against Houston, the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers coming up which may help tip the scales one way or the other toward whether the team will buy, sell or do something in the middle.   Part of the fun of this time of year is reading columns from Jon Heyman or Jim Bowden about which trades make sense. So I’v

WARNE: Pre All-Star Weekend Mailbag

Hey guys. I’m writing you all from vacation in beautiful Rapid City, S.D. We’re on our way to see Mount Rushmore in the morning, but before that, here’s the mailbag column I promised you all almost a week ago. The homestand got kind of busy, and I ended up writing a James Rowson/Byron Buxton column I wasn’t previously planning on.   Also, my baby turns eight weeks old this Tuesday, and so we’re spending my paternity leave and some of my wife’s maternity leave on the road because we never take va

Catching up with the Catcher; Hanging With Mr. Hughes

Hey guys, I've been filming video podcasts with a couple Twins players over the last few weeks, and thought this might be a good spot to post them:   Catching up with the Catcher - Ep. 1     Catching up with the Catcher - Ep. 2     Hanging With Mr. Hughes - Ep. 1

7/6 GAME NOTES: Twins Put Up Crooked Number in Third, Hold Tight Rest of the Way in 6-4 Win over Orioles

A six-spot in the third inning gave the Minnesota Twins all the offense they needed -- or would get -- while Jose Berrios and three relievers combined to hold the Baltimore Orioles offense at bay in a 6-4 win at Target Field on a balmy Thursday night.   A poorly-conceived throw from Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini with one out in the third torpedoed much of the value he provided with the bat on a night where he hit a pair of doubles and scored a pair of runs. His throw extended the inning, bu

Twins Hitting Coach James Rowson Clarifies Hitting Plan for Byron Buxton

Some comments made by Twins center fielder Byron Buxton during the road trip to Fenway Park last week sent the blogosphere/Twittersphere into a tizzy. Buxton, who has hit just .209/.283/.303 this season coming into Thursday night’s game against the Orioles, told Jake Depue of 1500ESPN that he had scorned the leg kick he used to start the season in order to put the ball in play more — including more balls hit on the ground.   “[The goal is] putting the ball in play more,” Buxton told Depue. “Putt

7/6 PREGAME NOTES: Berrios vs. Bundy, Breslow Bullpen and Being Better

It’s steamy and for the most part sunny as the Minnesota Twins prepare to open a four-game series — their final one of the first half — against the visiting Baltimore Orioles. A pair of good righties will tangle in this one, as Jose Berrios takes the ball for the Twins and Dylan Bundy counters for the Orioles.   Felix Jorge was in the clubhouse chatting with teammates and learning about his new home stadium — since his MLB debut was in Kansas City — and manager Paul Molitor confirmed that he wou

7/5 GAME NOTES: Ervin Santana Goes the Distance in Twins 2-1 Loss

Baseball is a game of inches. Of what-ifs. Of should haves, would haves and could haves. This is rarely more evident than in a 2-1 Twins loss Wednesday night at Target Field, when the go-ahead run scored on a steal of home -- as part of a double steal -- and a potential home run ball just missed going out by perhaps less than a foot.   Ervin Santana was brilliant for the Twins, as he tossed his fourth complete game of the season in a losing effort. He threw 117 pitches (80 strikes), and got his

Angels-Twins Pregame Notes, July 5

It’s steamy with nary a cloud in sight as the Minnesota Twins look to complete a three-game sweep at home against the Los Angeles Angels. A pair of righties will tangle as recently-named All-Star Ervin Santana takes on Parker Bridwell. More on that in a bit.   Miguel Sano got ready for his upcoming trip to Miami for the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby by putting a number of balls -- at least three which I saw -- into section 332 during pre-game BP. That’s not a misprint -- he hit them to the 30

7/4 GAME NOTES: Buxton, Gibson Let Freedom Ring in 5-4 Win over Angels

Here’s a blanket statement that on the surface probably won’t surprise anyone: History is not on Kyle Gibson’s side. We aren’t talking about his ERA coming into the game, though that could have doubled as the prefix of a Twin Cities-area phone number.   We aren’t even talking about his numbers since coming back from Rochester, though his ERA was approaching 5.00 with an OPS against of over .900 since returning from his exile.   Rather, we’re talking about Gibson pitching on July 4 — something he

Twins-Angels Pregame Blog (7/4)

Greetings and happy Fourth of July from Target Field! It’s overcast and warm as the Twins prepare to take on the Los Angeles Angels in game two of a three-game set. The Twins beat old friend Alex Meyer and the Angels 9-5 on Monday night to open the series and improve to 42-40 on the season.   The Royals also won on Monday night, so the teams remain deadlocked for second place -- 2.5 games behind division-leading Cleveland. Also of note: the Angels sent Meyer to Triple-A prior to Tuesday’s game.

MUST SEE: Fan Tweets Brian Dozier Proof He Hit a Home Run

In the third inning of the Minnesota Twins’ 8-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Friday night, Brian Dozier hit a long foul ball to the right field corner on a 1-1 pitch from Royals starter Jason Vargas. It was initially ruled foul, and manager Paul Molitor asked for a review.   After the review, the call was upheld due to inconclusive evidence to overturn the call.   Well, how is this for evidence?     Luke Thomas appears to be a recent graduate of Missouri State Unive

REPORTS: Twins to Promote RHP Felix Jorge from Chattanooga for Saturday Start

As the Minnesota Twins were in the process of losing to the Boston Red Sox 6-3 on Thursday night, word broke that the team had honed in on who’d make one of the starts in Saturday’s doubleheader in Kansas City.   It’ll be righty Felix Jorge, who’ll be making his big-league debut, and making the jump from Double-A Chattanooga.   The move was first floated by Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press early Thursday:     The move was then reported by Mariana Guzman, who covers the Twins for

Twins Shortstop Prospect Nick Gordon Will Play in Futures Game

News broke Thursday afternoon that Twins infield prospect Nick Gordon had been selected to play in the 2017 All-Star Futures Game at Marlins Mark on July 9, 2017. Gordon, who has spent the whole season at Double-A Chattanooga, is the only player who’ll represent the Twins at the game.       The Futures Game — which was first played at Fenway Park during the 1999 All-Star break — was created to showcase top-end minor-league talent, and is separate from All-Star Games at each level. REPORTS: Miguel Sano Will Compete in HR Derby

While it’s still in the air whether he’ll be voted to start the All-Star Game — voting ends at 11:59 p.m. ET Thursday — there have been reports that Miguel Sano will be taking place in the Home Run Derby at Marlins Park on Monday, July 10.   Gomez lists himself as the editor of Z101, a verified account on Twitter whose bio says it is the “station with the largest circulation in the Dominican Republic.” A post from that site dated one week ago lists Gomez as winning a prestigious award for h

WARNE: The Time is Now -- The Twins Should Call Up Zack Granite

By now you’ve probably heard that the Minnesota Twins have an outfielder who is setting the world on fire down at Triple-A. His name is Zack Granite, and he’s a jack-of-all-trades as far as outfield defense is concerned, and he’s hitting a robust .371/.423/.516 in 54 games between Triple-A Rochester (49 games) and High-A Fort Myers (five games).   He’s not just stellar in the batter’s box, but he’s stolen 119 bases over five season in the Twins system at a success rate of 73.4 percent. WARNE: My 2017 AL and NL All-Star Teams

The balloting for MLB All-Star teams ends this Thursday at 11:59 p.m. Eastern, and fans can vote up to five times every 24 hours — up to a total of 35 ballots.   The results will be announced on a television special on ESPN at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, and the game will be played at Marlins Park on July 11.   So, who do we think should be on the rosters for each side? We’ve cut through all the red tape for the final balloting and just made sure we had each team represented by at least one player
