Twins Minor League Report: Arizona Fall League Preview - Walker Provides Intrigue

Fall. My favorite season.   It’s always sad to see the summer go, but the colors in Minnesota, ducks and geese flying overhead, and deer rummaging through the woods are some of my favorite things.   The fall season, October especially, also means it’s time for the MLB Playoffs, another one of my favorite things. Whether that is because early in my childhood I got to stay up late to watch the Twins win the 1987 and 1991 World Series with my hero Kirby Puckett being magical, or getting to sit in t

Twins Minor League Report (AFL Week 6 and Final Recap): Kepler Finishes Season Strong

It was about a week ago where the Minnesota Twins AFL team, the Salt River Rafters, clinched their spot in League Championship game, but they still had a few games left to play before that.   Eddie Rosario entered the season’s final week with a chance at a batting title, and two relief pitching prospects had yet to allow a run in a league play. How would they finish?   Let’s check out what happened in week 6!   Byron Buxton – Did not play.   Buxton had surgery on his fractured finger three weeks

Twins Minor League Report (AFL Week 5): Rogers Returns

The MLB Free Agency period opened last week after, and in unsurprising news, the Minnesota Twins have yet to make any moves.   Former Twin Michael Cuddyer inked a two-year, $21 million deal with the New York Mets, and all twelve pending free agents to receive qualifying offers, declined them.   In the Arizona Fall League, the Salt River Rafters moved on without the Twins’ Byron Buxton manning centerfield, but welcomed back another one of their participants.   Let’s check out what happened in wee

Twins Minor League Report (AFL Week 4 Recap): Buxton's AFL Season Finished

The big news out of the Minnesota Twins camp this past week was the naming of their next manager, Hall of Famer Paul Molitor, but that wasn’t the only notable news in the organization.   In the Arizona Fall League, it was further bad news for Byron Buxton’s season, as he injured his finger in Monday’s game, and will miss the rest of the AFL season.   Read on to find out how the rest of Twins prospect’s fared during the week, and how the AFL Fall Stars game went for their two participants!   Byro

Twins Minor League Report (AFL Week 3): Hits and Holds

The end of the third week in the Arizona Fall League marks the halfway point of the season, and at this juncture the Salt River Rafters, for whom the Twins prospects play, have clearly been the class of the League. They lead the East Division with a 12-4-1 record and are the only team with double-digit wins.   In week 3, Taylor Rogers was again the only Twins representative who didn’t see action.   Did Eddie Rosario continue to hit? Did Byron Buxton turn it around? Did Zack Jones and Jake Re

Twins Minor League Report (AFL Week 2): The Rosario Show Continues

The second week of the Arizona Fall League season included a tie for the Salt River Rafters as their game on Friday went 11 innings, and the teams ran out of scheduled pitchers. Overall on the week, the Rafters were 3-2-1, and Eddie Rosario continued to rake and run.   Let’s see how all of the Twins prospects fared in week two of the Arizona Fall League.     Byron Buxton – 4 games, 3-18 (.167), 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K’s. Batting .229 overall.   Buxton again played in four games, playing cente

Twins Minor League Report (AFL Week 1): Rosario Comes Out Hitting/Running

The Arizona Fall League season started last week on Tuesday, and Minnesota Twins Minor Leaguers Byron Buxton, Eddie Rosario, Max Kepler, Taylor Rogers, Jason Adam, Zack Jones, and Jake Reed all helped the Salt River Rafters compile a 4-1 record to open play.   So let’s check out what each of those players did in the season’s first week!     Byron Buxton – 4 games, 5-17, 4 R’s, 2 RBI, 2 BB’s, 4 K’s, 1 SB, 2 Errors.   Buxton batted leadoff and played centerfield in all four games on the week, gett

Twins Minor League Report (9/20): Championship Series' Go To Deciding Game Fives

Tyler Duffey was on the mound for the Minnesota Twins on Sunday as the parent squad looked to avoid a home-series-sweep at the hands of the team who has been chasing them in American League Wild Card standings. Duffey delivered, tossing seven shut-out innings as Twins won 8-1 to end the series with the Teams tied in those standings. The Angels next series has them facing the Houston Astros, whom they are both chasing. The Twins have an opportunity to make up some ground in the next few days whil

Twins Minor League Report (8/8): #MayDay Is Here, Poulson Debuts

The big news in Twins Territory on Friday was the promotion of Trevor May, who will make his MLB debut against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, opposing recent A’s acquisition Jeff Samardzija. The Twins options Chris Colabello after Friday's game to the necessary room for May.   Kyle Gibson took the mound for the Twins on Friday in Oakland, and until the fifth inning was continuing to resemble a revelation for their rotation. That’s when Oakland struck for four runs and a nearly insurmountab

Twins Minor League Report (8/30): Vargas Powers Rochester, Chattanooga Sweeps Double-Header

The Minnesota Twins got a brilliant start from Ervin Santana on Sunday afternoon, and held off a late rally to win two of three games from the American League West division leading Houston Astros, and remain in the thick of the Wild Card standings. That Miguel Sano guy hit another home run, too. (He might be good…)   In the minors on Sunday, there were a few other brilliant starts from pitchers, a pair of double-headers, including one that went late into the night, and a Tropical Storm set its s

Twins Minor League Report (8/3): Comeback Trails

The Minnesota Twins offense exploded twenty-three hits to pound their rival White Sox on Sunday afternoon in Chicago, 16-3. Danny Santana was 5-6 and a home run shy of the cycle, while Chris Parmelee (2-2), Oswaldo Arcia (3-6), and Eric Fryer (3-6) hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning with the game well in hand. Arcia’s mammoth blast cleared the seating in right field, and was estimated at 452 feet, which would be the longest HR of the year at U.S. Cellular field per ESPN’s H

Twins Minor League Report (8/29): Rochester Remains In Playoff Hunt

Trevor May was cruising for the Twins early in Baltimore tonight, as he had struck five through the first three scoreless innings. But in the fourth the wheels fell off, as he plunked Adam Jones and Nelson Cruz consecutively to load the bases. He struck out old friend(?) Delmon Young, but a walked another, J.J. Hardy, to bring in the game’s first run. Chris Davis then launched a 3-1 pitch for a Grand Slam, and a 5-0 Orioles lead May and the Twins would not recover from.   <rant> Of note

Twins Minor League Report (8/23): Wheeler Dominates, Kennys Hit Ball Far

It was a low-scoring night throughout the system Tuesday, but that means there were several good pitching performances for the Twins affiliates. As an organization, they combined for just 19 runs (2.7 per game) on the day, but because of those performance went 5-2 on the day in the minor leagues.   To see which other starting pitchers came through besides the dominating effort from lefty Jason Wheeler at AAA, keep reading!   RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 6, Norfolk 0 Box Score   Rochester’s offense

Twins Minor League Report (8/23): Gonsalves Struggles

The Minnesota Twins got to Orioles closer Zach Britton on Sunday, and stole a 4-3 win in extra innings thanks to some early help from the bat of Miguel Sano (11th HR in first inning), and late help from the defense of Baltimore (2 errors in the 12th inning) to move back to .500.   In the minors on Sunday two affiliates had trouble producing offense, starting pitching was a struggle throughout, including one game from a top lefty, and one game was rained out. Overall the Twins affiliates were jus

Twins Minor League Report (8/22): Hit Parades

The Minnesota Twins pounded the Detroit Tigers on Friday night TWENTY to six, courtesy of twenty hits including nine for extra bases and four home runs. Eduardo Escobar was a double short of the cycle (which makes no sense…) and 5-6, Kennys Vargas had two doubles, and Oswaldo Arcia smashed his fourth home run (did it hit the Target Center?!) in his last six games. Danny Santana and Trevor Plouffe (back-to-back after Arcia’s vs. Detroit infielder Andrew Romine) also went bombing. Good stuff.

Twins Minor League Report (8/21): Strong Pitching Comes Up Short

The Twins minor league affiliates got (nearly) eight full innings of pitching from each of their starting pitchers on Sunday afternoon, but just one of those starters ended the day with a notch in the win column. That was thanks to a lackluster display of offense throughout as two of the lineups were shut out, and the other two totaled just four runs on the day.   In Transaction news, the Minnesota Twins optioned one-day callup Adalberto Mejia back to Rochester after his 2.1 inning MLB debut on

Twins Minor League Report (8/2): Three-Headed Monsters...

In the majors, Minnesota Twins starter Yohan Pino ran into trouble in the seventh inning, and it led to four runs and a 6-4 Chicago White Sox lead. The Twins were able to make an immediate comeback with a three fun eighth inning however, punctuated by a two-RBI double off the bat of Oswaldo Arcia. They would add an insurance run in the ninth, courtesy of Danny Santana’s fifth home run, and Glen Perkins shut the door on the White Sox to pick up his 27th save on the year.   In the minors, one af

Twins Minor League Report (8/2): Rochester, Chattanooga, and Elizabethton Roll

Mike Pelfrey battled with Hisashi Iwakuma Sunday afternoon at Target Field, and Brian Dozier’s ninth inning home run to tie the game at one was the Minnesota Twins first earned run against Iwakuma in his career, a streak lasting 42.0 innings (they did have two unearned). But the bullpen wasn’t able to hold off the Mariners in extra innings and they fell 4-1 to split the series.   In the minors on Sunday, there was little offense except for one guy in a Florida State League double-header, a lefty

Twins Minor League Report (8/17): We're Going Sweeping!

The Minnesota Twins and newcomer Tommy Millone were knocked around on Sunday afternoon in between the rain delays with myself in attendance, but the young guns in the lineup continued to provide me with some hope the future.   Danny Santana led off the game for the Twins with a triple to left center, Kennys Vargas had three hits on the day including his third career home run, and Oswaldo Arcia launched his 11tth home run of the season.   In the minors, two affiliates completed series sweeps, two

Twins Minor League Report (8/16): Buxton Powers Rochester to Win in Extras

Tommy Milone’s return to the Twins rotation and a home run off the bad of Trevor Plouffe gave them a series victory in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon, and brought Minnesota’s record on the season back above .500.   In the minors, it took a superb day from a (or the) top prospect in Rochester to bring them a win in extra innings, multiple hitters powered Chattanooga to a blowout win at home, and a dynamite start from a pitcher with a hitters name gave Fort Myers an easy win on the road. Twins Minor League Report (8/14): Plenty of Hits in AA and A+

In the minors on Sunday, the offenses of the Chattanooga Lookouts and Fort Myers Miracle combined for nineteen runs and twenty six hits on the day. One team pulled away late, and the other was forced to make a comeback. Would they be able to complete it?   There was also some roster shuffling in AAA and AA due to Rochester’s postponement from Saturday. Andrew Albers was optioned back to AAA in addition to David Hurlbut’s promotion yesterday, and Luke Bard was promoted to Chattanooga so they’d ea

Twins Minor League Report (8/11): Gonsalves Aces Barons

As you will find out reading the rest of this report, I don’t have to say much more in this opening other than pitching was fantastic on this night throughout the Twins’ affiliates after the clunkers the MLB team put on display in their double-header.   They were 6-0 on the day (7-0 if I include the DSL), and you can check out all the standout pitching performances, including Stephen Gonsalves achieving “Ace” status by taking down his fifth Southern League opponent in the Birmingham (Red) Barons

Twins Minor League Report (7/8): Tough Losses

All six of the Minnesota Twins’ Minor League affiliates were scheduled for action on Friday, though only five of them would play their games. It was a tough day however, as only the Gulf Coast League Twins were able to pick up a victory, and two other teams lost despite allowing only three runs combined to opposing teams.   Daniel Palka did something noteworthy (because it wasn’t hitting a home run), Jose Berrios and Kohl Stewart were on the mound at AAA and AA, and the five teams combined for e

Twins Minor League Report (7/5): Kernels Pop Early For Series Win

The Minnesota Twins were unable to take the series on Sunday in Kansas City, falling 3-2 to the Royals in Ervin Santana’s season debut. He did more than they could have hoped for limiting the Royals to just two runs on three hits, while striking out eight. But Miguel Sano driving in another run, and Aaron Hicks going yard weren’t enough to get him the victory.   In the minors on Sunday, there was a comeback win for one squad, and another pounded out fourteen hits to jump out to early big lead.

Twins Minor League Report (7/31): Wade's Power Not Enough For Miracle

As the Minnesota Twins played an afternoon game with potential trade commodity Ervin Santana on the mound against the White Sox, there were five games being played in the minor leagues by their affiliates on Sunday.   LaMonte Wade had a big game for the Fort Myers Miracle, but it wasn’t enough for his team to come out on top. Rain also affected multiple games on the day, with one being postponed and the other being called complete in the top of the sixth. Who got to play, and would anyone challe
